The town Flipside is the the central hub of every area.

Most of the game is in 2D and at the beginning of Super Paper Mario Wii, Mario is able to change into 3D. Changing into 3D then gives the player the ability to move around obstacles which is not passable in the 2D perspective. When Mario changes into 3D it reveals the z-axis where there are several landscapes and items to acquire. Though, Mario cannot stay too long in the 3D environment because it decreases his health.
