The game was formatted on Guitar Hero World Tour that is able to support bass and lead guitar, vocals and drums. The Guitar Hero Metallica has similar feature with World Tour such as band Career modes and single player mode. The player can also play with online friends and share songs with the use of GHTunes. An additional mode in Guitar Hero: Metallica is the ‘Expert+’ for drums that enables the player to use a second base drum pedal to imitate the style of Lars Ulrich, Metallica’s drummer.

There are 28 master recordings featured in the game and additional 21 songs which were personally chosen by Metallica. Extensive motion capture was performed by the band for the game’s performances and avatars. Extra behind-the-scenes videos, concert and tour videos are also added in Guitar Hero: Metallica Wii. There are also fact video pop-ups for several of the songs in the game.
Unlike other Guitar Hero games, this game allows the player to control the playing of rock music through the use of special instrument controllers. The player must be able to follow the notes shown on the screen with the use of the Wii-compatible instruments. Score multipliers can be earned when the player is able to hit the notes continuously or sing the right phrases for vocals. Too many miss on the notes will end the game and the player to try it again.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Wii garnered a lot of positive feedbacks and it is really a great tribute to one of the legendary bands. It is also said to be the best game Neversoft has ever done in the Guitar Hero series. The difficulty levels in all throughout the game was appreciated by players as compared to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
